Route details
Description
Hike along streams, through woods and hedgerows.
Kergrist means “villa Christi” (house of Christ) in Latin. It was from the 1205th century that the cartularies of several Breton abbeys mentioned “Querchrist” for the first time. In XNUMX Alain IV de Rohan donated to the monks of St-Martin de-Josselin the church then dedicated to the Holy Cross, a cult propagated by the Templars. These monks could be the founders of the village. Kergrist, like Hémonstoir, was formerly a truce of the parish of Neuillac and depended on the bishopric of Cornouaille.

Step 1: Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul
From 1205, we find traces of a church in Kergrist but the building retains its physiognomy
current from the 1893th and 1940th centuries. However, there are elements from the XNUMXth century, such as the south transept with its pointed arch window and the beautiful door between the sacristy and the choir. It was in the XNUMXth century that a side chapel was attached to the north side of the nave. In XNUMX, the church was enlarged and a bell tower was built in XNUMX.
Like many trevial churches or chapels in Brittany, the Saint-Pierre Saint-Paul church was originally made up of a parish enclosure. Of the parish enclosure of the Kergrist church, only a strip of vegetation remains, recalling the limits of the sacred space. The ossuary, formerly installed on the southwest wall near the porch, was removed in the first half of the 19th century.
Step 2: The Kergal and Perchenic Streams
The Kergal stream has its source in the commune before flowing into the
Canal from Nantes to Brest. As for the Perchenic stream, to the north, it constitutes the departmental limit with the Côtes d'Armor. It has its source upstream of Perchenic and constitutes a tributary of the Blavet.
Step 3: Village of Guerlogoden
Kergrist once had many manors and lordships. This was the case in Guerlogoden. This lordship composed of a manor, with a farm and a mill in particular, belonged in 1459 to Jehan de Guerlogoden. In the XNUMXth century, it passed into the hands of the De Lantivy family.
Step 4: Berrien Manor
The Berrien manor (private property) dates back to the 1580th and XNUMXth centuries: it was built by Gilles de Bahuno in XNUMX. The remains of a half-moon tower bear witness to the defensive function of the building in the XNUMXth century. This home clearly illustrates the evolution of the medieval manor towards the noble residence.
Step 5: Saint Mérec Chapel and its washhouse
The Saint Mérec chapel is mentioned as early as 1627. It was rebuilt in 1847 and consolidated
in 1891. Its interior porch dates from the 7th century. Saint Mark would come from the Breton “Sevrec”, whose etymology would come from “Seih Breh”, meaning “the seven brothers”. Legend has it that the 7 Saints evangelists were brothers and that they were fed by a doe. Inside, we find the statues of the XNUMX founding saints of Tro Breizh, around the edge of the bedside niche. Two pardons take place there, that of Saint Mérec in June and that of Saint Gilles in September.
Step 6: Calvary of Brohes
Kergrist has several ordeals. That of Brohes is made of granite and dates from 1762. It has an octagonal shaft and branch resting on an upper base decorated at each corner with a human head.
Step 7: Wash house and Christ fountain, near the town
The wash house and the fountain of Christ host a procession and a bonfire during the pardon in September.
Step 8: Granite Calvary in the village
Located near the cemetery, this ordeal is the oldest in Kergrist, it dates from 1719. The vertical shaft is engraved with fleur-de-lys. Christ and the 3 figures surrounding him rest on human heads.
